Hello! I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline update on this Friday, the 17 day of August 2007.

There's been a deadly turn in that rescue for six trapped coal miners in Utah. Three rescue workers were killed and six others injured while trying to reach their trapped co-workers. A "seismic bump" is reportedly to blame for the new collapse. The governor of Utah said today that underground rescue efforts should stop. A fourth hole will continue to be drilled to locate six miners who've been missing for nearly two weeks now.

Hurricane Dean is heading toward Jamaica after passing the islands of St. Lucia and Martinique today. The first Atlantic hurricane of 2007 is expected to reach Jamaica and the Yucatan in Mexico this weekend. Dean is delivering winds as high as 100 miles per hour, storm surge flooding and battering waves.

NASA says that no repairs are needed for a deep gouge in space shuttle Endeavour's belly. Mission managers say the gouge is too small to be catastrophic during next week's re-entry. Originally, they were concerned that the heat of re-entry could weaken the shuttle's aluminum frame at the damaged spot, which would result in lengthy post flight repairs. NASA officials say they're confident that Endeavour will have a very successful re-entry.

There are new warnings about giving cough or cold medicines to children under two years old. The Food and Drug Administration is advising parents against giving them over-the-counter medicine unless advised by a doctor. The FDA says such products can be harmful if more than the recommended amount is used or if it's given too often. The agency says too much medicine may lead to serious and life-threatening side effects.

That's all for now. Thanks for watching today's news headline, and for all of us at UPI, have a nice weekend.

  • i calculated: if a quarter inch is the height of one man say 6 feet. then compared to a quarter inch the men are 6.25 feet underground. i feel they are alive keep trying they are waiting.

  • Wow..much more then a group of 6 people are dieing a day. So why should we care now? Their probobly dead so shut the fuck up already.

  • Anyone with any brains can clearly see the mine collapse was caused by homosexuals, who were working with Bill Clinton, after consulting with illegal immigrants, who were brainwashed by Muslims. Oh Yeah, and the Labour Union sabotaged it to make themselves seem more relevant. Don't you know anything???

  • The fact tha that owners deceptions have'nt been commented on is erie. Those men were gone 2 days after the collapse. No other lives should have been lost in the quest for a pat on the back.
