Weapon: Princess Guard
Armor: Dragon Armlet
Materia: 3x HP Plus, 2x MP Plus, Enemy Skill, Restore, Time, Barrier, Heal (to boost magic) and Elemental=Ice.
Had to allow the use of a better weapon this time, since I don't have enough materia slots otherwise. I could have leveled up Chocobuckle to deal 1250, but that would have made it too easy.
This is another one of those battles where you need to know his AI in order to win. The attack pattern is usually Rock Drop, Rock Drop, Cave-In, repeat, but the number of Rock Drops vary. He can use it only once, but he can also use it three times, and on top of this, he has the ability to drop two rocks in one turn. That's very bad if your HP isn't full.
Demon Rush is used when you bring his HP below 2500, 5000 and 7500. He always starts waving his arms before he uses the attack and you get one or two turns first. When you have Haste and he has Slow, you can get a total of three if you're lucky. The reason why my Chocobuckle deals 835 damage is so that I can trigger Demon Rush with three attacks.
His last attack is Petrif-Eye, which inflicts Petrification after a countdown from 30. It's kinda rare and it's used randomly, so there's a chance you won't see it at all. If he had used it, I would have used White Wind to remove the countdown. The good thing about White Wind is that it doesn't remove Sadness, which Esuna would have done. It costs more, though.
First of all, you want him to open the battle with something else than Rock Drop. Either that, or get a turn in before him. The best start is to get a turn in before him and then he uses Cave-In. Your first priority is Big Guard, to put up Haste and Barrier. Unfortunately, you get MBarrier as well, so Cure will suck until it runs out. Then Slow him on the first chance you get. It doesn't matter if you take some chances early in the battle.
With Haste, the Barrier doesn't last very long. The best time to put up a new one is when he waves his arms, so you want to use every third Chocobuckle when it's about to run out. Of course, you have to survive Demon Rush too, and you might not get more than one turn before it, so make sure to have enough HP when you use it. Thanks to your Haste and his Slow, you will often get two turns between him, so you can use the first to heal and the second to attack.
And that's how the strategy works. This is a great battle that mostly relies on strategy and not so much luck. The only luck you need is him not getting any critical hits with Demon Rush or when he uses a double Rock Drop. That's instant death.
No Haste?

You get Haste from Big Guard.
