GUSTAVO MONASTRA tenor

@giampierone010 Grazie. :)

Someone mentioned Lanza here on comment but his was a recording, NOT LIVE as this is and also his recording was made with studio sound. He had a great voice sure but was not really an Otello at age 34 when he recorded it. He did sing in Butterfly in 1948 on stage in 3 shows and was Fenton in''Merry Wives" but basically was a concert and movie tenor, yes he had an operatic tenor of great beauty and his recording of this is very popular with many opera fans. For me though, MDM was Otello!

I saw MDM do it in the house back in Nov. 1959 when I was 18 years old! It was at La Scala and he was fantastic in the role and I still remember it. Another one I enjoy on recording is the early Martinelli live performances of it with his Strong Spinto voice and emotion in the role but I never saw him in house of course. MDM was a real dramatic tenor, none quite like him today.

@federic017 Grazie!

I am a fan of MDM; but this is about the worst assumption of this piece I've heard of his...all of the parlando is curtailed, often sharp and the vowels, distorted. Through the dramatic commitment and sureness, he presents something more convincing than many Otellos of today. Thanks for sharing!

Dissapointing. :( He's mentioned as one of best Otellos ever, but here... quite poor, to much talking instead of singing at the begining... Indeed, "gioa" sounds quite OK. Go and check G. Giacomini to hear a REAL Otello :)

Whatever. I love Giacomini but that is just stupid.

What's stupid? Something I said? If you ment this singing, then I agree - totaly stupid!
MisterSoprano 2 years ago
Yes. What you said was stupid. If you cared to do some more listening and research you would find more than enough information, video, and audio backing the assertion MDM was the best Otello ever. To make the implication you did based on one clip you did not prefer is stupid.

its not stupid, MDM is very tired here. He still handles himself because well, he is MDM.. but clearly inferior to his real stuff. You can notice the tiredness how he compensates by using this bleating color to retain snappiness of chords. And yes Im a MDM fan so dont start crying that he wasnt perfect in every single case.

If he sounds tired it may be because of the other arias he sang prior to this one. A hard core recital is much more taxing than an opera where you get time to rest. I much prefer this type of singing where there is the possibility of catastrophic failure to "safe" pansy ass singing.
