Compare this with the Caine Mutiny, written by a former Naval Officer. Mr. Hunter was wrong in all accounts. "you don't work with a captain because you like the way he parts his hair. You work with him because he's got the job or you're no good" Crimson Tide works from the wrong Hollywood assumption that all military men, especially high ranking are stupid martinets. They also promote the ridiculous concept that the assorted "drug addicts" and "sex perverts" could do a better job. Rubbish.

Many if not all approach as one is good, one is bad. The fact is the best leader; military or otherwise; would combines both. It is what we all as leaders aspire to be, a perfect fusion of authoritative yet collaborative. The writers of the film actually call reference to this at the end "but in sofar as the letter of the law is concerned you were both right. And you were also both wrong. This is the dilemma that will occupy this panel, this Navy and this country's armed forces as a whole"
