SPECIAL PREVIEW: In advance of this weeks broadcast, Bill Moyers closing remarks on Lyndon B. Johnson's path to war in Vietnam.

This week on the Journal: As President Obama prepares to announce how many more troops he will send to Afghanistan, and Hamid Karzai is sworn in to another term as the head of that country's corrupt and dysfunctional government, on this week's edition of Bill Moyers Journal, Bill Moyers remembers the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson and the agonizing decisions that escalated America's involvement in Vietnam. Through Johnson's secret tapes of phone calls and conversations, and his own reminiscences, Moyers recalls the events that plunged us ever deeper into war. Bill Moyers Journal airs Friday nights at 9 pm on PBS. Check your local listings.

  • America has "generational amnesia". It forgets all the lessons learned from past mistakes and repeats them all over again every generation or so. In fact, if you look at its history, America has had a major war every 20 years. God, what a stupid bunch of people (generally, but with a few exceptions, of course) Americans are. They were blessed with finding such a bountiful country but are too stupid and violent to really enjoy it. Their stupidity squandering so much on war is just getting worse.

  • Moyers is correct. He's referring to the "chicken-Hawks" here state-side who are continuously taking pot-shots at any decision the prez makes. There is no political decision that will satisfy everyone. The time to make strategic decisions is BEFORE the US overcommits. Don't be short-sighted---remember the USSR in Afghanistan and US in Vietnam. Who won those conflicts? Noone.

  • I always felt Afghanistan was another Vietnam which I was against even as a little boy living in the the USA. I would see the nightly news on the Vietnam war and wonder what the hell are we doing there? Watch this whole Bill Moyer Journal on this listen to LBJs recordings and see how similar the 2 wars are the only real difference is the place and time.

  • @gmcmudder1"Judgng frm yr comnt I say yr not in or from USA"

I'm American. I love my country. I just hate what it's become frm such a noble begining. U really think the USA is what the Founders envisioned it 2 be & set down 2 paper? The America of today especialy after WWII, has morphed into an empire. Did U know that it has over 700 militry bases in 139 foreign countries? Has secret prisons. Conducts covert ops wherevr it wants. THIS is the USA that stands 4 all those pretty things on paper?

Maybe you did, just as I did.

    But someone/something is filtering comments.

When I posted others, the (post comment) tab returned with "waiting for approval"

Judging from your comment, I say your not in or from the U.S.

Sure we can elect a candidate, and our choice is honored (if the election was not tainted)

That person takes office and is bombarded by lobbyist (agents of large corporations who fund election campaigns) seeking benefit for their donations. In short our government representatives rely on us to appoint them, and once elected they work for the interests of the corporations. So we as Americans didn't have a say in the war.

  • yea, we need more troops so that we can eliminate more of hamid karzai's brother's drug competition.

  • americans are geniuses ! ... lol wut?

  • Give this man the Medal of Honor. Thank you Bill Moyers for your courage to say the right thing. Hopefully our President will be listening to you.

  • Thanks for your courage and honesty, Bill

  • Get out now Mr.President. Get out now. No to peace with honor. No to stay the course.

    Get out now.
