(Sacramento) Asemblymember Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) is working with State Senator Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) to provide tax relief to tens of thousands of economically distressed Californians who have fallen victim to Californias mortgage crisis. More than 100,000 California homeowners who have lost their homes through foreclosure or relinquished their homes in whats known as a short sale in 2009 are faced staggering tax bills due April 15. Assemblymember Caballero is a co-author with Senator Calderon of legislation (SBx6 16) that will relieve Californians from state tax liability related to forgiven mortgage debt. California treats the forgiven debt as taxable income. The federal government does not. Heres more from Assembly member Caballero in this Assembly Access video.
