Could I obtain the same results by simply placing the stick in the sand (not pointing toward the sun). Mark it's begin point and then let about 20 - 30min. elapse, and then mark the point of the shadow again? Wouldn't the starting mark be West and the end shadow mark East? Thanks - and thanks for posting. I am hoping to learn more about the basics of navigation and survival.

I tried this method and waited 15 minutes but the shadow ended up pointing more North than East. I waited another five minutes and still no east. I can't see how the shadow would point east unless the sun was west of the stick. Even with the other stick method a start and finish point are marked to indicated W and E the shadow doesnt point the direction the tip of the shadow moves west to east because the sun moves east to west. I believe there is a flaw in your method.
This is not a reliable method because the results are different depending whether it is morning, afternoon, time of the year, and latitude.
