  • @mollymitch1 I have investigated but there are more states in Australia that have a different cape gauge wide. The major corridors are often only standard gauge. Victoria irish broad gauge (1600 mm) NSW standard gauge (1435 mm) Queensland cape gauge (1067 mm).

  • @trainfanNL I think Tasmania is the only state now which has a smaller gauge railway line. 3ft 6inches, but then it doesn't come across Bass Strait so it doesn't matter. And the stupid powers over there took the Tasman Limited off years ago because it wasn't cost effective. But a hell of a lot longer by bus.

  • The traction motors on the locomotive are very loud.

  • Nice footage in the blue mountains.

  • @electricrailwaygod - the Blue Mountains electrification is the same as the Sydney suburban system, ie 1500V DC - not applicable to long-distance electrification. Wiring ends just past Lithgow. Running IP with diesel power is probably more cost-effective, and saves a loco change at Lithgow.

In Victoria, the Gippsland electrification was de-energised beyond Warragul decades ago, for much the same reason - too expensive to maintain both wiring and substations.

  • @trainfanNL - There has been a continuous standard-gauge line from Sydney to Perth since 1970. The Indian Pacific is a continuous journey with no break of gauge.

Standard-gauge trains have been running to Brisbane since 1930, Melbourne since 1962 and Adelaide since 1984. The Melbourne-Adelaide corridor was "standardised' in the nineties, along with much of western Victoria.

  • every state used to have its own track. (so used to travel in Australia a nightmare). there is what has been done. This train ride is still on different gauges so you have to change every time or is it a direct train?

  • Correction: "I saw an old documentary from the 70's..." was meant in the previous messages.

  • As Australia is only south of Japan my home, instead of modelling your railways after America which is a total embarrassment to the world stage of railways, why not turn to JAPAN for your rail technology instead of following an old fashioned and out moded system such as America! Japan is also I believe 95% electric! America is about just the converse! Shameful! (You, the States and Canada are the only three countries that still use the out-moded bell on their locos! (It's not really necessary)!

  • I saw an old documentary ofthis train from the mid 760's as runing between Sydney and Orange ELECTRICALLY! Why in God's name is the IP being hauled by DIESEL under wire!? One would think that the OHW is already there, why not offer at least PART of the journey par ELECTRIC traction? (So far as I am concerned both the IP and The Ghan should be TOTALLY electrified! Where does one get the electric energy from one may ask? Simpkle: LOOK UP! (Its called SOLAR FARMS i the Outback!
