This is footage of me riding Clue, my 2003 American Quarter Horse mare, at the walk, trot, and canter. This was actually my last ride on her before my infamous fall that broke my ankle and pretty much killed any further show aspirations for the summer.

I'm not sure what was setting her off in the beginning--a noise in the nearby woods, the jump, etc.--but she definitely got stiff and nervous every time we came through that corner. Eventually, it lost its flavor, but the first time (as you can see) she bolted, and the second time she went up and tried to buck. We had a heart-to-heart by the fence, and we did a few trot circles in its vicinity, and life went on.

She was very forward, but responsive throughout the ride. I asked her to lengthen and collect at the trot and canter, and she was paying attention. We were mutually paying attention to each other, which is what I think was (and still is) the key. She actually has a much bigger stride than Duncan when asked to move out, but at the same time she remains adjustable. I am very proud of all of the progress she's made, especially in these last few months. Like any young mare with lots of energy, she can be a sweet dream...or a beautiful nightmare. ;) I heard this song for the first time not too long after my accident, and I couldn't help but think it fits!

  • My goodness that very first still shot at the beginning looks pretty impresive. Glad she got over whatever it was that she dint trust at that corner and it was a fun thing to learn reading her stride can be bigger then duncs when asked to lenghten out. Not familiar with this song myself iether.

  • hahah oh silly clue! nice job getting her to settle :D and she is looking soooo great!!!
