I couldnt post this earlier because it was just above 100MB and YouTube wouldnt allow it. But after my last video was linked from several awesome links including CartoonBrew, Seward Street and CookedArt, I realized this video might be well received as well. So I've squeezed the compression, hopefully it wont look too bad. I messed a little with the zoom on this one and the camera moved about a bit more so I hope it doesnt make anyone sick...!

I've put up a few stills from this presentation on my blog including some notes from Paul Driessen's presentation at UCLA on my blog: http://www.numairabbas.blogspot.com

  • This was at Cal Arts. I don't think we were really encouraged to film and take snaps but I couldn't resist!

  • I'm actually pretty sad that traditional animation has pretty much been phased out.

  • well i wont repeat whats already been said but.... I LOVE 2D because of the simple fact that sombody drew it

the thing about 3D is ( as it is currently atleast)... the characters still look very phony, plastic-like and rubbery

because of the textures, and shading applied. IT IS DISTRACTING! It really takes away so much from the action or expression thats going on.

.....being sombody that draws, im always in awe of what can be accomplished by lines,.. its really an inspiration...

  • these things make me smile

  • @Shan2809 It's an art institute in Valencia, California.

  • @RetroNoodles I agree 100%

I've only seen one 3d animator that I like and that is David O' Reilly. His cartoons have a life about them that I never really see in 3d animation.

  • where is cal arts? is it a school of some sort? thank you for posting this vid :)

  • Glen Keane is a machine!

  • @Dalen77 Amusingly enough there's a cup of those pencils he's using in front of me, they're ebony pencils, its sort of like a 9B except less craon-ish. I've seen Glen and many other animators also draw with china markers and colored pencils, like polychromo's, and even dip pens... You've probably figured this out by now though.

  • Dose he draw with one of those peel off chinese markers that are like charcoal. I know he doesn't use lead.

  • @tiagoinka I envy the people that were even there to see this!

  • I'm like. Totally bawling at how amazing this guy is, he gets the fucking /essence/ of movement and bringing life into simple shapes.
