In March 2008 Radford University Professor of Art, Charlie Brouwer, completed "Rise Up Piedmont" an installation sculpture for Piedmont Arts in Martinsville, VA. Made of old orchard ladders which rise up from a house form made of slabwood, the structure nearly touches the 40 foot ceiling of the art center's atrium.
It was constructed in and for the space and will remain on view through August 2008. The no longer usable ladders were given to Brouwer by Levering Orchards of Orchard Gap, VA. For Brouwer, these worn, broken and repaired ladders that he has stained white are like individuals of a community. In the installations he makes with them, they are screwed together and hold each other up to make the structure possible.
