This is clipped from the DVD "Eastwood After Hours-Live At Carnegie Hall", and is performed by James Carter/Joshua Redman/The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. It is astonishing, and i love it so much. So I ripped it out from my own DVD and share with you all. If you are interested too, please buy this DVD for the entire show. I can guarantee that you will not regret!

  • I have to agree with many on several points:

First, that this isn't really a competition or a battle in anyway, just a really well prepared jam session. There isn't a "better" player, it is all subject to personal preference.

That being said, MY personal preference was in Redman's solos. I say this simply because Carter has raw power, he's bluesy, and has a great command of his sound, but Redman has an incredibly lyrical take of this song and he seems to be dancing circles around the changes.

  • @iJiggsy

good point of view, agree with you.

but would you please tell me more about "dancing around the changes"?

  • @LorentzYeung I mean't that although Carter isn't ignoring the changes, he uses more traditional conceptions of the changes like roots, fifths, blues scales, etc. It seems to me like Redman has got a hold of the tonal centers of the changes well enough to "break through the glass ceiling" parsay. I just mean, that while carter's solo was great, Redman explored the flow of the changes and had a lot of movement conceptually around the changes, like playing over the changes, or blending in to them.

  • @iJiggsy

I get it now, thanks alot!
