At the end of a short hike through the Boise National Forest you will find one of Idaho's most unique hot springs. There is so much flow at Vulcan that the US Department of Energy has been salivating over it's geothermal potential for years. I've heard many a rumor that uncle Sam wants to develop the Vulcan complex into a geothermal power plant. Let's hope that doesn't happen!

Vulcan Hot Springs used to have a couple different soaking options. Now there is primarily one. There are others, but because of the design of the main pool, difficulty awaits for the opportunist soaker. The main pool is huge. Without a doubt the largest in Idaho. Almost too large if you ask me, I'm worried that there is too much slow moving water. And yes, Chiggers are active at this hot springs, but in low amounts. Just keep your clothing and towel away from the hot springs area and you should be fine.

  • Hi Marty, it's still undeveloped... lots of work will be needed to bring this guy back to its former glory. As of last season, most of the surrounding area was still closed due to forest restoration as in no camping all over FSR 474 S. The moved the TH pit toilet as well, basically across the street.

  • And this? wow, 1000 fingers up!

  • Hey, Josh- So what's the word, Hummingbird? Is this soakable? We're heading back to the Lowman area in the fall, and I was thinking we'd swing up here & to Gold Fork- Marty

  • Sad to report the area burned, and took out the log dams. As of August 2009, there were no soaking pools and the woods are gone. It remains a lovely hike and fascinating geothermal area, but be ready to make your own pool.

  • Nice. We have have a video on our channel of Tofino Hot Springs. It's a campground hot spring on the Pacific ocean!

  • One of my favorite hikes and hot springs! ONly when I went a few falls ago, it was so low it was unsoakable. Better go in spring or summer.

  • looks like a good soak

  • We used to camp there every summer between 18-22 years ago. Great to see that its still there :)
