United Methodist Women from across the country went to Wall Street today, Oct. 10, 2011, to raise concerns about unemployment, foreclosures, high cost of education, rising healthcare costs and shrinking pensions. Their signs cited "Greed", Resolution #4056 in the United Methodist Church Book of Resolutions, challenging wealth inequality in the US and calling for fair taxation, including taxation of the nation's wealthiest.

  • More signs from United Methodist Book of Resolutions #4056:

"Reduce concentration of wealth in the hands of a few."

"Scripture warns us of the sin of greed and its devastating effects"

"Eliminate government support programs for the wealthy at the expense of the rest of us."

    And from UMW:

United Methodist Women say: Turn the World Right Side Up!

  • Signs are from the United Methodist Church Book of Resolutions 2008, Resolution # 4056 on "Greed." They read:

In God's Kingdom, everyone has enough! (Matthew 13:31-32)

"There is enough in the world for everyone's need, there is not enough for everyone's greed." Ghandi

The basic needs and rights of the poor are to be protected from the greedy (Exodus 23:6-11)

"An economic system based on greed is contrary to God's will and leads to ruin of the society."

I'm so sure they're buying boats, snorting coke, and going on over seas vacations.

  • Do you know the UMW (by the way they didn't even get that right on their signs... they have United Women Methodist.... I think it is United Methodist Women)... but do you know the UMW has MILLIONS and MILLIONS talk about rich... over $98million in assets...(from BBB charity review). Oh but I can hear it now... "but that is different.." Yeah right... Go sell all that you have and give to the poor... go ahead I dare you....

  • Yes SISohm these women sure are following the "sell all you have"... You quote many Scriptures but did not draw the right conclusion. All the portions you reference have nothing to do with those that are rich but those that have a heart condition.... love of money... and nowhere does it say that we are to go out and protest to redistribute the wealth... So let them lead by selling all THEY have... Again it is not about the wealth but the heart. And who are these (or you) to judge the heart.

  • Rich people are not condemned. The way they use their wealth is often condemned. Not necessarily a condemnation, but he does say that woe is in store for the rich (Luke 6:24). He warns against greed (Luke 12:16) And of course in Luke 16 he tells the parable of the rich man who dies and goes to Hades.

  • What is wrong with these women? Are they anti capitolist? Who do they think supports there church? Its not poor people. I believe in helping the poor, but not in wealth distrubition.

Come on ladies get a life!!!

I do believe there is greed , big time , but if you read your bible you have to know that

god will take care of the greedy in His way. You ladies , I am sure have class. Now demonstrate that!!

  • And we wonder why the UM church is shrinking... UMW leaders are nothing more than socialist in disguise... Jesus never condemned the rich... maybe if these ladies spent a little more time sharing the real gospel then there would be a "greed" issue for them.

  • This brings joy to my heart and yet sadness. Why is it that only the women can be counted on to do the right thing (especially in numbers)?? and they are hounded for it? Solidarity from your Methodist brother, and may Christ be with us all ...God Bless the UMW.

  • Ironically the Women’s Division of the United Methodist Church has roughly $60 million in assets and a stock portfolio rivaling any Fortune 500 company. Combined with generous giving from UMWomen over the decades they have become the wealthiest organization in the UMC. Didn’t see any signs that read, “Sell all you have and give to the poor” from them. These ladies do not speak for every Methodist, including me, president of a UMW unit.
