Amtrak 64 arrives at the Buffalo-Depew station on Christmas Eve 1994. Note the weather - it was a warm winter in Buffalo that year!

  • Nice! I didn't know Amtrak had any GP40's. Does Amtrak still have any and do they run them?

  • @mrsabatini I haven't seen any around since the mid-90s, and I haven't heard of any still active. It is possible they are still in service for another railroad, though.

  • Nice video! Cool engine- GP40

  • Thanks!

  • Great video. I enjoyed it.

  • @Trainlover4ever2006 yes it would. I wish they still had them.

  • @gp40mc Oops my bad....It would be interesting to see one of those GP40s on the Empire Service.

  • @Trainlover4ever2006 I have never ridden the Maple Leaf.

  • @gp40mc I rod the Maple Leaf to Schenectady to Rochester back in 2007 and it has Amfleet IIs and a P42. When you rode it were there Amfleet IIs?

  • @JSimp140 I'm pretty sure the Maple Leaf is the only one that ever changes engines. I'm not sure if it changes everyday now or just sometimes but I believe the Adirondack, Ethan Allen Express, etc usually use P32's for the entire trip.

  • @gp40mc Last time I rode the Maple Leaf a few years back, we had P32 #711 from Toronto all the way to Penn Station. We refueled in Albany, but there was no engine change. The P32 spare factor is just about 0, so they want to keep the P32s on the New York-Albany leg as much as possible. I'm not sure if the Niagara Falls or Rutland trains change engines, but I know the Canada and Chicago trains do (48/49 uses 448/449's power west of Albany)

  • @JSimp140 I've heard the maple leaf still sometimes switches power in Albany but just from a P42 to a P32 which look exactly the same haha. I don't know why they just don't run a P32 all the way to Toronto but whatever. I wish there was still more variety in locomotives.

  • if i remember correctly, the GP40TC was the primary motive power for the Maple Leaf from Albany to Toronto. FL9s hauled the train between Albany and Penn Station. the equipment used for Amtrak service in New York State was much more interesting back then than it is now.
