Way back when the US manned space program involved more than endless trips into low Earth orbit, CBS News created unique opening sequences for each Apollo landing mission, including original music. Here we can see the one for Apollo 11. The sound is dodgy, so you miss the full impact of the music, but this is still the first time I've heard it in more than 40 years. I remember it well though. Thanks a lot. The ones for the remaining missions were also excellent. I'd love to see them too.

The late Harry Kramer of CBS-TV inn NYC iss the great announcer on these openings. He did lots of Special Events for CBS News, plus the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, and also some CBS-TV sopa operas, including the commercial billboards. His son worked at CBS News from 1966 to 2006 in Special Events--just after Katie Couric arrived there--and since then oin contract for a few weeks per year to cover space as a gifted producer.

Obama just killed our "Return to the Moon.." Why NOT take 20 billion out of Defenze?
..sigh..
Yet I guess I can understand Obama. Unlike any US President before him.. (he is black ya know) like Jackie Robinson in 1947.. he is walking a very tight rope.
Any trip up on his part will be echoed across a 24/7 news cycle.
Considering the "House" he was given.. I think he is doing much better than I would.
Imagine if I gave NASA what they needed to go to the moon. I'd be impeached!

they saved their best effort for 11 coverage.
when the nets, especially cbs spent the time and money of quality broadcast elements, despite the primitive facilities then.

Everything back then was done with so much more taste. I love the way the sponsors were introduced, and the unparalleled professionalism of Walter Cronkite.

These events were like something I will never forget watching when I was ten years old. It was filled with patriotism, amazement, and wonder. Can do spirit of America. Great coverage. We need more!!!!

I always liked what CBS did for the opening of their start up coverage of the lunar missions. I thought the music and the video of Apollo 16 was the best. It showed in a nut shell what was going to take place and the music was great. I had a cassette recorder and have recorded some of the flights and that music but the quality is lacking. Thanks for putting these up.
