Panasoffkee Cemetery

Video and photos are from today at Panasoffkee Cemetery in Lake Panasoffkee, Fla. The cemetery is being marked by workers using ground-penetrating radar to detect unmarked graves. The county government is removing the graves and placing them in another cemetery and has promised to provide land (75 acres including cemetery property, which the county owns) for free to a company that wants to use the property for industrial/manufacturing purposes. Eight to ten unmarked graves had already been found by this afternoon. There appear to be about 20 marked graves, most without headstones. Panasoffkee Cemetery is a historic black cemetery that could date back to the 1830s and have ties to the Seminole Wars, as the area was once occupied by Seminole Indians and runaway slaves. It is believed to be the oldest in Sumter County.

The broken headstone laying on the ground is my great grand uncle Joseph D White. Born in Cape Vincent,NY. He enlisted in the 186 NY Volenteer Infantry,he listed his birth 1846 on headstone it says 1849. He was in many battles and was there for the battle of Richmond. Why he moved to Florida I do not know but he spent several years there.
