James Kalm anxiously returns to the Metropolitan Museum for the debut of The Pictures Generation. As a young artist he witnessed the rise of this group first hand. Deriving their images from photographic sources, their philosophic underpinnings from the French Deconstructionists and their attitudes towards presentation from commercial and corporate campaigns, the Pictures artists ascended the heights of art world stardom in short order. Their assimilation of the mass media and use of nontraditional means is a prime influence on todays New Media. Featuring excerpts from comments by Douglas Eklund, Associate Curator in the Department of Photographs.

  • Seriously, artist's lives are difficult enough, without having to deal with public misrepresentations of their works and intentions ... having opinions is one thing, making up facts is another ...

  • @mfluder8 I appreciate the obvious efforts you've mad to respond to this video. and I realize because of these efforts that this if of great impotence to you. Please feel free to add whatever comments or suggestions you'd like to the conversation. Encouraging discourse is one of the main missions of the "Kalm Report".

    thanks,

    JK

  • James Kahn isn't too smart or knowledgeable. Allan McCollum making tens of thousands of his Plaster Surrogates? Not even remotely true, what an idiotic statement, insulting to the artist. Get a life, Mr. Kahn.

  • @mfluder8 I know it might be hard for you to acknowledge, but if you google "Ten Thousand Individual Works" which is the artist's own title, not mine, you will see examples of this work composed of surrogates . Check it out.

  • @jameskalm That's just it, you've made your lack of research and knowledge clear. McCollum's "Individual Works" project had nothing to do with his "Plaster Surrogates" project -- totally different projects, nearly ten years apart. Where do you get this stuff? I can't believe anyone pays attention to the nonsense you convey.

  • @mfluder8 Thanks, it's always nice to have a real expert contribute to the conversation.

  • As an art school dropout in 77 I saw a lot of this work but didn't know about the pictures deal till I read about the Jack Goldstein retrospective fiasco in LA. Thanks for filling in the gap.
