I would argue that the real love story in Sayonara was between Red Buttons and Umeki. It was so intense and beautiful. And unfortunately, they lived out the kabuki theater metaphor. :(
-
Umeki certainly deserved it. With a role that really hasn't got much depth, she managed to make the most of what she had to work with. Her performance is so full of pathos it's impossible not to feel love and pity for the character of Katsumi.

You see Carolyn Jones clapping as Miyoshi gets up :D

both handsome men had some strong genes as their sons captured their good looks

ohhh...its cc baxter

She most certainly did more than say "Sayonara." She had some heart-wrenching scenes and her performance had an authenticity that is difficult to successfully convey on screen.
-
@dinasztie I disagree, she was very subtle in the cheesy as hell "Sayonara". Have you seen her in "The Flower Drum Song"? She was very good.
-
Wow, the haters are thick (mentally as well). Umeki deserved it as much as anyone, no slight to Lanchester or Jones...

Notice how Anthony kind of pulls her away from the podium
I'm not very aware of this time period. The people. The sights. The sounds. I'm not aware of who shouldn't have won and who should have won. But I am aware of this being one of the most charming acceptance speeches I have ever seen. ... ... ...
