this song really touching..as I aware that all problems come in and out and never stop..but I believe that I surrender my life to the Lord that will understand and help in any condition. For anything happenned in my life, I believe that my soul is still Trust to You Lord.

@Kannah02 The phrase "It is well with my soul" is taken from the Shunammite voice in 2 Kings 4.26. This hymn was composed while the author was suffering a great loss, because his four children died all in the same day, in a shipwreck. So I think it expresses contentment, or satisfaction, but safeness is also a possible meaning.

@Kannah02 I think it also means that my soul is satisfied, or will be on that great day: "And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight; the clouds be rolled back as a scroll! The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, even so, it is well [on that day when our faith is manifest in the coming of Christ, my soul shall be at rest knowing He is here!] with my soul! @Kannah02 There are several different meanings that can be applied in this context. First, my soul is safe, knowing, as v. 2 says, "my sin, not in part, but the whole is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more." And in v. 3: "Though Satan should buffet and trials should come, let this blest assurance control: that Christ hath regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed his own blood for my soul.It can also mean my soul is at peace, as in v. 1: "When peace like a river attendeth my way."

Could anybody tell me the meaning of "well" in the context of this hymn?
In my country, the part of "well" were transltaed to "safe".
Does "well" have any meaning of "safe"? Thank you.
