ARtIC LAB® by JoAnn Wiechmann and Deborah Balfanz, is a bilingual Response to Intervention (RtI) program for elementary school students (Grades 1─5) who exhibit mild articulation deficits in English or Spanish. This 20-hour, evidence-based program provides sound placement instruction, intensive drill work, and sound generalization activities PRIOR to referral for speech-language pathology services. http://www.superduperinc.com/products/view.aspx?pid=ARTIC22&lid=5EF19A58

This program seems like it would be fun for students as well as teachers. By giving the teachers the tools they need within the program, the students have everything they need. This program would help catch the students who are labeled as having a learning disablility and do not as well as the students who do and have not been identified. Within this program the student are aware of what is asked of them at all times.

Articlab is a great tool for students to work with others while learning. It allows students a fun way to work on skills. I would love to have all this cute stuff in my classroom. The example of the program shows students working well at each station. The students were aware of what they were supposed to be working on.

Even though this program serves as a RTI for students with articulation issues, it also allows the student to take ownership of their education while having fun. It allows the students to work on issues independently, while self-monitoring and self-checking their sound errors. This program also serves as intervention prior to referrals to speech or special education which may not be necessary.

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist, and I don't get it. There was no actual progress monitoring done. There is no error correction when the sound was incorrectly articulated. The kids are just practicing incorrect production over and over again. That is counterproductive in correcting articulation errors! This ad claims the program is research based; I want to see that research before I believe this program could be even mildly effective.

@DGirl5000 Thanks for your comments. With Artic Lab, you probe the targeted sounds before beginning using a contextual approach. You find only the words the child can say and that is the only words they practice. So, they should not be making incorrect productions. Progress monitoring is done weekly and there are reproducible forms in the resource guide to do this. The video shows the progress monitoring station at the end. There is also exit criteria.

@DGirl5000 All of the research is in the manual. ARtIC LAB® was field-tested in a culturally diverse school district in the Houston, Texas area. During one semester of intervention, 89 students with speech sound errors received 20 hours of intervention over a ten-week period. Of the 89 students who participated in the field testing, only two cases resulted in referrals to special education and testing for speech therapy.

@DGirl5000 Since then, ARtIC Lab® has helped them to reduce their caseloads by 20-30% so that they can concentrate on more difficult clients. We offer a free CEU course about ARtIC LAB® on our website.
