Good review and you are right about the tension. I was sad about the ending, I thought it was quite blunt and I wanted there to be more about what happened afterwards. What you said about who's fault it is, I don't think you can blame either of them really. I'm glad I read this book. It's got me back in to reading again. Just Noticed you've reviewed The Road as well; that's weird, it's the next book I'm reading :)
I am wirting an eassy for On Chesil Beach and Philip Larkin and I have to say that it is one of the most annoying books I have every read. The carters are annoying the story line is annoying and it has put me off reading another Ian McEwan book. The book does I have one good side its only 5 chapters long. P.s If you every want to read any Philip Larkin Poems DON'T! its just a wast of time.
You are correct about the tension in the book. I knew the ending would be unhappy for the characters, but throughout the novel I was on edge. I do think the novelist seemed more sympathetic towards Florence. I however disliked her intensely.
I found the prose absolutely majestic. Ian McEwan is amazing. Truly one of the great writers of our time.
