actually, they knew Ray was about to die of liver failure, hence Willie tearing up, the somber band and Leon, who wrote this song's look says it all

I think that they all were going to switch verses and then Ray took over, and well, that plan went right out the window once they realized how much of a hold over the song Ray has.

My very first concert was Leon Russel and Willie Nelson, I did not know who Leon Russel was and had become a new fan of Willie Nelson, what a truly blessed persn I am, my brother who is no longer with me took me to that concert, God Bless him for all he did to expose me to great music, all genre!!!!
