It's a glorious song and I'd love to see Momie go back to that sound, but knowing his penchant for novelty, I find that very unlikely. That is unless he somehow manages to justify the retro excursion through mind-bending McLuhian logic.
He deserved better if he'd had luck and someone had helped him. Tin Tin or the PSB or another great producer to push him . Momus should have had a few hits and been more loved.
You're probably right, although I picked up my first Amis book after he mentioned him on this album. It could be argued that their careers have followed similar trajectories since the late 80s:)
Whilst I love Don't Stop The Night, I'm not sure I'd have wanted him to have mainstream success (selfish of course!) He's lost me a bit with the last couple of albums but he made some great stuff in a less commercial style straight after Hairstyle.
For those who do not know, Momus and The PSB are in a mutal-appreciation club for unpop. Now I love Momus, I do, very much, and this does sit somewhere between PSB and Sparks, but I don't think his production value can hold much to what PSB did, and their songwriting styles are not very comparable (other than their affecting deadpan vocals..but Tennant sings, and Momus usually just says).
Very true, a shame, cause M is great and a more incisive songwriter IMO but he could've done with his own Chris Lowe and better collaborations, maybe. The last 20-odd seconds of this video are brilliant, though...
