Warning, don't watch this video for AJAX because the idioms are completely outdated. Found out the hard way :(

I just want to point out that doing Ajax "yourself" isn't much harder than using RJS. Actually, if you use a framework like jQuery, I'd even go so far to say it's even less painful or at least the same. However with jQuery you can make it unobtrusive which is a big bonus.
