October 26, 2008-- I was riding my bike with my son and daughter through the fire swept Limekiln Canyon of Porter Ranch, CA when my son spotted a smoldering hole along the bike path with smoke pouring out of the top like a volcano. Even though it was almost two weeks since the Sesnon fire burnt up this canyon, there were still these hot spots. This was weird as it was a very deep circular hole with a wood lining going all the way down. As if the remains of a tree trunk had fire burning in its core. I guess the roots were still smoldering way down deep inside of this wooden hole.
That is what remains of a tree stump. The temperature must have been very intense there. Burning all the way down through the root system. At least here the hole is plainly visible. Firefighters can be seriously injured stepping into one of those.
