A video of the school reforestation/garden project I worked with during my Peace Corps service in Mindo, Ecuador.

Fruta Comida, Semilla Sembrada"
"A fruit eaten is a seed sown

How does it work?
1. Make a seed bank.
It starts with only 4 items: a table, newspaper, fruit, and some old jars.

The kids eat fruit but instead of deposing of the seeds like we usually do, save the seeds, wash them, and set them out on newspaper for 6 days to dry. Then the kids bring them to school with old jars. The jars will them be label with the names of the various fruit seeds and the date. We then will organize the seeds into their jar.

2. Create a plant nursery.
Items needed: plastic bottles, dirt, and compost.

In order to create the nursery we cut the plastic bottles (i.e. 2 liter pop) in half and make holes for water drainage on the bottom. Fill with a mixture of soil and compost and plant the seeds!!

Then when the plants are big enough are distributed in 3 ways; taken home, left at the school, and planted around town.
