BETODIAF is an international experimental performance project concerned with the body in both self- and social-confinement. The show explores the subjects of imprisonment, control and self-determination through a unique set of choreographic elements. Building a juxtaposition of the brutal and beautiful in minimal scenes, BETODIAF portrays individual human struggle under a multiplicity of authorities.
BETODIAF evolved from an open series of interdisciplinary workshops in the arts conducted at the Goethe-Institut from early February to May, sponsored by the Davis United World College Scholars Foundation and Bard College (New York, USA). Throughout these four months, participants developed choreography through a series of creative exercises including: theatre improvisation, mimicry, drawing, storytelling, and poetry. Each workshop made use of a framework of expressive arts that allowed individual input within an ordered, collective whole.
Over thirty-five participants including teachers, students, dancers, academics, and theatre activists in Sri Lanka were involved in the project throughout the production of BETODIAF. This unique show introduces a fresh group of young artistic talents from Colombo performing for the first time in collaboration with nATANDA Dance Theatre of Sri Lanka.
