I do a lot of night shots and I would just say yes first a tripod is needed but you can use a wall etc all depends on the length of time you are shooting - 5 seconds to 30 seconds you can for example use the self timer as already stated and works fine
I use a cable controller and bulb so anything up to 10 min shots - turn your iso down as far as you can 100 or 200 is best - and turn you f stop up as far as needed
I have done great shots with f11 and done ones with f44 over a very long time

You don't need a cable release, just use the self timer

@kalimistuk there is no black or white when it comes to night photography. every scene is different. you cannot use a certain shutter speed or aperture and expect consistent pictures in your night photos. it all depends on the light in the scene. yes, you can use flash to light up foreground subjects but only to a certain distance from the camera sensor. for distant landscape photos you cannot use flash because it is not powerful enough. use a low ISO, try f/5.6, adjust shutterspeed.

It also helps to weigh your tripod down if winds are high or your tripod is on soft ground

What are you using to record this video, Its quite clear

I have set a tripod in that exact spot in victoria harbor

ahhhhhhh does not make any sense. What about the settings like ISO, Aperture, Speed???
Well that did not explain anything, the only tip we got from that was turn your flash of.
Iso ? shutter speed ? white balance ?
infact some of the most interesting night shots have used flash to light up the foreground combined with a long shutter speed for the rest of the image.
Coming from Lexar I would of expected a lot more info.
