Piers Morgan, host of CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" and a former editor of two British tabloid newspapers, on Tuesday called a British lawmaker's allegations that he participated in phone hacking "nonsense."

Morgan said he may have been a victim of hacking but was not a perpetrator.
Louise Mensch, a Conservative member of Parliament on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, made the allegations during a hearing before the committee Tuesday.

Lawmakers are investigating claims that News Corp.'s News of the World tabloid hacked phones and that journalists paid police for confidential information. The claims have led News Corp., controlled by media baron Rupert Murdoch, to shut down the paper.

Ms Mensch said:

"Piers Morgan, who is now a celebrity anchor at CNN, who do not appear to have asked him any questions at all about phone hacking, is a former editor of the Daily Mirror. He said in his book 'The Insider' recently, and I quote, that that little trick of entering a standard four-digit code allows anyone to call that number and hear your messages. In that book he boasted that using that little trick enables him to win scoop of the year for a story about (former England national soccer team manager) Sven-Goran Eriksson. So that is a former editor of the Daily Mirror being very open about his personal use of phone hacking and indeed he is (a) former News of the World executive."

On his show Monday night, Morgan acknowledged that "I was editor of two major British tabloid newspapers for 11 years. I worked for News Corp. as editor of the News of the World 16 years ago, from 1994 to 1995. I was also editor for the Daily Mirror, a paper not owned by Rupert Murdoch, from 1995 to 2004."

Morgan said he did not believe that any story published in either newspaper was gained in an unlawful manner, "nor have I seen anything to suggest that."

However, when Morgan was the editor of the Daily Mirror, he DID oversee the faking of photos that showed British soldiers "abusing" Iraqi's - thus putting both UK & American soldiers in severe & direct danger. (See story)

In a statement the Mirror Group said it had fallen victim to a "calculated and malicious hoax" and that it would be "inappropriate" for Morgan to continue.

The Queen's Lancashire Regiment (QLR) said the Mirror, under Morgan's stewardship had "endangered the lives of British troops" by running the pictures.

Piers Morgan - you are a total scumbag.

The highly respected CNN would be well advised dropping you asap from the wonderful CNN name.
