http://www.ted.com Matt Mills and Tamara Roukaerts demonstrate Aurasma, a new augmented reality tool that can seamlessly animate the world as seen through a smartphone. Going beyond previous augmented reality, their "auras" can do everything from making a painting talk to overlaying live news onto a printed newspaper.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate

The app is called Aurasma. It's only for Android and iOS devices so people with symbian are yet again left behind.

It's not because of the presentation. Her face has been like that since we had a night together back in 2009. True story.

Oh yes, because your phone can tell you what brand the device you're filming is, and gather the information from online to tell you what you need to do to get the object running. Eventually we'll have this in glasses, and walk down the street with it. You're ignorant to technology and if you're going to talk down to technology like this, you shouldn't be permitted to use it when you realize how remarkable it is.

Huh. I watched this whole thing thinking my reality was going to be slightly more augmented than that. It just sort of looks like a higher-octane version of one of those silly apps that puts cartoon sunglasses on vacation photos. I was waiting for dude's gadget to start projecting information onto nearby surfaces or at least do something cooler than pay testament to the processing power of modern phones. It didn't.
