Joan Baez ~ JESSE ~ written by Janis Ian. Joan recorded this in concert at the Palladium (New York). Broadcasting for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, 1977. Joan says: "Jesse" threw itself at me over the airwaves. When I recorded this song for the "Diamonds and Rust" album, I had my first experience tinkering around with a synthesizer and I loved it. I hope I do justice for a great song."

  • Roberta Flack's performance of Jesse is very good. But Joan Baez's studio recording is the best. Unfortunately, Joan was not a great live performer as she got older.

  • @Billmcnu Yes, I agree. When Joan was younger, she was much more playful as a performer.

  • obviously, a GREAT song. wish there was video. had this album 34 years ago, playing on the turntable. oh crap, am i that old ?!?!

  • lol, yes the song is a beautiful song by Janis Ian. She might have the video oh herself. I`m probably as old as you, but the older we get the wiser we get. Let`s celebrate! Take care!

  • This is the most gut wrenching song I ever heard. I cry each time I hear it. I was in a loveless relationship when I first heard it and I would wake each morning dreading that they would play it on the radio, at the same time wanting the validation of another human being that such pain could be known by other than my self. There is something rare and exquisite about a person who can write such clarity about the human condition. I am forever grateful.

  • Yes, Janis writes songs from her experience and they are quite sad. She tells us she was never popular in High School. She discribed herself as "ugly" and "always the last to be picked for teams". You write with great sensitivity, and that is good! Sensitive people like you and a lot of us are always going to feel hurt the most and the longest. But there is someone for everyone. Think highly of yourself and never give up.I have a couple of songs to send you. Take care!

  • Janis Ian's version is by far the best. It is the original.

  • I have never heard this version and I am not a big fan of Baez, but have to say this is great. The Janis Ian is dear to my heart and will always remain a favourite, but is such a wonderful song its tough not to do it justice.

  • My mom always used to sing this song and put me to sleep :)

  • who ever sings this has my love...... for they must have a heart that is so so warm and kind and loving.. and so many have done it and i hope many will again and again... its always haunting....

  • Now that was an audience!!! LOL

  • my mom listened to this growing up and she passed away a few years ago...it breaks my heart and makes me feel comforted all at the same time...

  • MARAVILLOSA CANCIÓN, MARAVILLOSA VOZ.

  • I think of my husband every time I hear this song. He's been gone a year and I still miss him. I'm in a new relationship but I still miss him but I'm trying to go on.
