Your guess is as good as mine. So far we've replaced the camshaft sprocket, timing belt and tensioner. Checked the pistons, spark plugs, other belts, fans, and anything that may be loose. No luck, still rattles. If I sit too long at idle in drive, it does get louder.

  • take a rubber mallet and hit the catalytic converter. see if u here a rattle

it may have broke up in side

  • Hey, I found the problem at least in my car. It is the Harmonic Balancer, it's a little warped and is hitting the crankshaft case.

  • I have the same rattles sound, it was the piston knocked by valves , so I replaced the top head gasket 2 mm. and ready . When replaced this gasket be sure about the thickness .

  • You ever figure out what this sound is?

My car (96 tercel) makes the same sound, not all the time and seemingly for no reason.

I figure, it still gets about 35mpg and gets driven a lot and there aren't any problems... I never saw any obvious problems when I was working on my car for other things. Let me know if you ever figured out what it was.

  • it might be the steering pump, or the water pump.To check remove the belt one by one ,then start the engine.

  • rear bushing in the alternator is gone. take off the alt. belt and start the car.

  • harmonic balancer maybe

  • I ran into this before. The intake cam has a 2 piece gear that drives it. You have to remove the intake cam and tension the front part of the gear by inserting a line-up punch in the hole in the gear. Leave the tool in place while reinstalling the cam. Make sure you match up the cam to cam timing marks. Pull out the punch and reinstall the valve cover. Hope this helps.

  • Just to be accurate.

There were actually two different 4AFE engines one was in the Japanese built Corolla and the other was in the American built Corolla and Geo Prizm. Can you guess who built which and which engine was better? The valve cover is different between the 2, the better Japanese 4AFE has a lower cover and round sparkplug boots.

  • Why I Have A Felling That Something Is Striking With Either Body Or Some Part Itsef....This Is'nt Sound Bearing Noise....!! Something Is Either Broken Inside Making This Kind Of Noise...!!

Check For Water Pump Also Along With Alternator..Maybe Broken Bearing Or Soo
