By request, here is more of the 1963 Aida - the entire Nile scene in four parts. Remastered tape and improved sound (superior to my earlier upload). Hear the probably best Amonasro on record, Giangiacomo Guelfi, together with Leyla Gencer as Aida, Giulietta Simionato as Amneris and Gastone Limarilli as Radamès. Limarilli, another exonent of the harmful Melocchi school, is clearly the weakest part of the cast: flat high notes and monotonous stentorian singing. Bergonzi was a better choice in the 1966 production of the same opera at the Arena.

I swear, this should be required listening at EVERY vocal music school. Most young singers have NO idea that this kind of singing is even POSSIBLE. Just look at the number of hits this clip has gotten, and then check out Bocelli! Ha ha.

This is singing of the first order. OMG...I can listen to this every day.

There is no baritone today that is even half of Guelfi"

The best we have is Hvorostofski who cannot sing Rigoletto,Scarpia or Macbeth

because his voice would be drowned out. What have we endured for the last

@Aimiklingsor93 Maybe you have listened to the clip where Leyla Gencer recalls that moment where Guelfi went for that big F# and held it forever? She was pissed! But what a moment it was! The audience went wild...and for good reason. This is what opera is all about...the big thrill...and he knew how to deliver it. She did, too.
