Great videos!!! Very informative and accurate. I started trying to roll using the sweep to back deck roll. Without any other help besides your videos, my very early attempts were successful. I can now perform a c to c, the sweep roll, and tonight at roll sessions tried my first back deck rodeo roll in my Mega Rocker. I followed your example and hit the roll the first time. Talk about stoked!!!!!!! Keep up the excellent work. I think you are a fabulous instructor.

i've tried that a lot times in my canoe polo training, but i can't do it! damn!!!!

Is this roll possible in a sea kayak or only short whitewater boats?

having fun learning to playboat. when i fall in akwardly and i try to set up, more times then not coming from the backdeck, the kayak rights itself. this happens almost everytime. would assume this is a rodeo roll, but not going under bow. just the movement of bringing my paddle to the side and my head to the cockpit rim is righting me.
thanks so much for you comments and congratulations on your roll. The videos were made to be an overview of the roll. So I just distilled it down to the absolute essentials. Lots have said they learned from this video.

Nothing to do with paddle to weight ratio. if you body goes throught the motions this roll will work.

You are an engineer......another great question. Of course the lower body is tied to the upper body through the core (or abs and obliques as I like to think of it) There is gong to be a reaction to the torso going from a tucked position to an opening up or standing up in your boat. Not only is it your torso going back but legs are going away from you. Does that make sense. IF you were in space could you lean back without your legs moving also........no way every action would have a reaction.

Apologies for the slow reply (2 months..) I forgot that I had posted 'till I came back to youtube today :).
I decided to have another blast at the rodeo roll after some time simply forgetting it, having learned the sweep+C to C rolls.
Good to know that remembering your teaching points I was very almost there - I reached the last point in the roll where I need to bring my body back out of the water, however I ended up sculling my way back up... I'll have it by next friday's session :)

Remember that last step there is always a way to reduce the energy needed in getting up not just creating more force with the paddle such as sculling. REDUCE THe force needed to the maximum by using full body technique.

Great question......I have taught people in your shoes. I think the sweep to lay back is the roll to do. You are going from leaning forward in a tuck position to standing up......or laying on the back deck of your kayak. I think that requires the list twisting and the easiest body movement.
