Project Eden is an intriguing, unique game from the creators of "Tomb Raider I & II" that looks like any other generic FPS on the surface, but it's actually not. Project Eden is a team-based first and third person "shooter" where up to four people can play, and teamwork is essential as every character is generally required to get through large, thought-provoking levels.

The game takes place in the future where establishments are built higher and higher, heading towards the sky, leaving delving buildings and neighborhoods below city limits. Playing as four UPA (Urban Protection Agency) agents, you are sent on what at first seems like a boring mission to find two technicians who disappear from the "Real Meat Company" (a corporation that produces organic meat, as most of the food in this world is synthetically made), which turns out to be much more.

The game focuses heavily on puzzle-solving and teamwork, with fighting playing a secondary role. You must use four characters who specialize at different skills. The leader, Carter, is good at negotiating and opening doors that require a higher clearance. Andre is a skilled engineer who can fix damaged devices. Minoko is a computer technician who can access and hack special terminals. Finally, Amber is a female cyborg who can withstand environmental hazards that would kill ordinary people. You can switch between them on the fly and give them basic commands as needed as well as use special mechanisms that further expand your exploration potential, and characters don't just die in the game; they respawn at certain terminals you visit. Four people can play and leave at any time without disrupting the flow of the game and the game has some nifty multiplayer functions too, which is quite nice for an old PC/PS2 game.

The core game is pretty unique and I can't immediately think of anything else that is quite like it. Perhaps the most immediate game this is similar to that I can think of is "The Lost Vikings", where teamwork was essential and required you to use every character effectively. Still, this game isn't for everyone. The game is really tricky and can be rather difficult. It's probably cheap these days, so I'd say check it out if you're into games that require you to think. This is a video of it in action. Enjoy.
