Nijushiho( originally 24 steps) Ohta Sensei, JKA Shotokan.

"Training in Kata is spiritual as well as physical. In his performance of the Kata, the Karateka exhibits humility, gentleness and a sense of decorum no less than boldness and confidence, thereby integrating mind and body through a singularly unique dicipline".

(Masatoshi Nakayama)

  • The beauty of it is that as much as we want to limit it within certain frameworks and styles, Karatedo is a living art!

  • Even within the same style you see different ways of looking at things, for example look at Kanazawa Sensei's Gojushiho Dai/Sho and JKA Gojushiho Dai/Sho! Look at Bunkai of senior Sensei, are they all the same? Is any of them wrong?!

  • Most of us look at the Kata and make comments on aspects on the basis of their "Style framework" which is conditioned and formed by a particular school of thoughts or Style. High level Sensei and more senior Karateka who are liberated from the "My style is best and the only right way" ideology see that the essential concepts are the same. They have less conflict with "the small Atoms".
