Load-shedding of Nepal_2010 & Unharnessed Alternative Energy in Nepal

Wind is still one of the unharnessed energy sources in Nepal. Its countrywide potential has not been assessed yet. Some studies have indicated that wind potential for power generation is favorable in Tansen of Palpa, Lomangthang of Mustang and Khumbu regions of Nepal.
According to AEPC there are various hilly regions including Kathmandu, Makwanpur, Kagbeni, Ramechhap, Thini, Palpa, Mustang, Manang, Pyuthan, Phakhel, Okhaldhunga, Myagdi, Kaski & Nagarkot which could be possible sites for generating wind energy in Nepal. According to a recent study, 3,000 MW of wind energy can be generated in Nepal, says Dr. Govinda Raj Pokharel, Former Executive Director of Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) which falls under MoST. A study has shown that around 70 MW of electricity can be generated through wind power around Kathmandu valley alone, says Bharat Poudel, an engineer at AEPC.

Given the crucial time frame up to 2020 during which global emission must start to decline, the speed of deployment of wind farms is of key importance in combating climate change. Building a conventional power plant can take 10 or 12 years or more, and until it is completed, no power is being generated. Wind power deployment is measured in months, and a half completed wind farm is just a smaller power plant, starting to generate power and income as soon as the first turbines are connected to the grid.
