I met Rosalie Sorrels and Utah Phillips at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, about 30 years ago now. With Utah, it was always in a group, for he always drew a crowd and simultaneously kept us all laughing and thinking. With Rosalie, I was lucky to find her sitting alone in the performers' area, and she was more than willing to share some company. We spent a good half hour together, if not longer. We talked about travel, about family, about songs, about living. Rosalie was anything but shy, I'll tell you that, and she didn't hesitate to share stories from her travels and family experiences. She talked right from the heart of things, with wit and humor. Rosalie and Utah were great friends. This video is of a Utah Phillips song, "Starlight On The Rails," from Rosalie's cd tribute to Utah, "Strangers In Another Country." I put it together out of abiding affection for both Rosalie and Utah, two of America's most honest and outspoken troubadours. I have been inspired by both of them.

Note: If anyone objects to this video due to copyright infringement, please make contact, and it will be removed. Its intention is to honor both Rosalie and Utah, and to encourage viewers to seek out their work. DL

  • Hmmmmmm - beautiful and touching.

  • I listen to music on Youtube very often, almost daily. I have never heard a tribute this good, this touching, and Lord knows I've heard a bucket full of them. This is excellent from start to finish. Thank you!

  • Paganmaestro, you are making my heart ache, in the best way possible.

  • Don't think I've seen a better video on YouTube: powerful words and wonderful pictures. "He was a man, and a friend always...." It has been a privilege to see and hear Utah and Rosalie over the years; we've all been the better for their music. Thank you, paganmaestro, for this record of their lives.
