  • Think of the = sign as a fence; when you move numbers to the other side of the fence, they become the opposite sign of what they were on the other side of the fence. So here you could combine the like terms by bringing them over the fence. So then +10 crosses the fence and becomes -10 to be with +18, and 2y also crosses the fence, (numbers without a - sign to their left, are considered to be + numbers so 2y is the same as +2y) and it becomes -2y to be with 3y. Now it's 3y-2y = -10+18 ---> y = 8.
