Devil's Garden: Between east and west
Summary: Today Afghanistan and the Balkans still bear the scars of the cold war. Here there are more anti-personnel mines than elsewhere. Every day, these weapons continue to injure and kill innocent civilians. Synopsis: During the cold war, anti-personnel mines proved themselves to be the staunchest allies of the former USSR. Widely used during the campaigns to expand the Soviet empire, most of them are still active in Afghanistan and in the Balkan states. Afghanistan, prey to decades of war under the Soviet occupation then under the Taliban regime, is now one of the most mined countries in the world. Over the years, the presence of anti-personnel mines in the countryside has forced the inhabitants to go into the towns, causing all the usual socio-economic problems inherent in a massive rural exodus. The Balkans did not emerge any more unscathed from the cold war or the conflicts for independence that followed on from its collapse. And, like elsewhere in the world, civilians are, and always will be, the main victims of anti-personnel mines. In Afghanistan, as in the Balkans, mine clearance campaigns are underway but the size of the task is such that it will take several decades to clear all the lands. http://ec.europa.eu/development/video_app/app_public/details.cfm?ID=2001/17/S...
