I read that a shark beaching itself is a very rare occurrence, but can happen when the shark is in a life-threatening situation such as an attack by a pod of killer whales.

I've never heard of an animal doing that to themselves on purpose, not saying it doesn't happen though. Even if it did it on purpose It's more likely that it just got stuck on the beach so this gives the shark another chance.
