Played by Gottfried Preller at the organ of the Bach Church, Arnstadt.

Johann Sebastian Bach had relatives in Arnstadt, heard that a new organ was being built in the new church (Neuekirche) to replace the one lost when the St. Boniface church was destroyed by fire, tuned and certified the new organ and was promptly employed as the organist. The young musician played the Wender organ for more than two years in the church known as the "Bach Church" since 1935.

It's still a matter of controversy whether Johann Sebastian Bach really was the creator of this toccata, which was subject to north German influence. This expressive composition originated between 1703 and 1706 in Arnstadt, Bach's first place of employement. Up to the present day, it remains one of the most popular compositions in the art of baroque organ music.

Gottfried Preller studied from 1967-72 at the Franz Liszt College of Music in Weimar. He was a prize-winner at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1972. He has been organist for the Evangelical-Lutheran Parish in Arnstadt since 1981. He has undertaken concert tours throughout Europe and to Japan and the USA.

  • Very good performance on a very good organ.

Is it possible to find a Dvd of this video?

    Title? Label?

  • Indeed, this is from a DVD named "J.S. Bach: Life and works". The page in Amazon says it is currently unavailable, however I downloaded it with μTorrent :)) I hope that helps

  • Thanks a lot! =)

I'll start the search for this dvd!

  • Actually, shall your option be Torrent, do the search in german words, I just noticed that the title in the server Mininova was literally "Leben und Werk of Johan Sebastian Bach". It's a .nrg file, which should be an image file ready to burn with Nero, however if you do not have Nero you can always extract the audio and video folders with Winrar, then burn yourself a DVD with ImgBurn

  • And you're very welcome. If for some reason you're not familiar with all this software lingo, please just let me know, I'll forward you by mail a more detailed explanation to these programs. I just started about a year ago with DVD conversions, and all I've ever used (successfully, I might add) is free software.

  • Listen very carefully to 9:20 - 9:22. There is this small pause and a high note is played, you can't catch it in many performances, but I love it. It's so subtle, but it really prepares that final coda.
