The Massachusetts DCR closed the southbound sidewalk of the Boston University Bridge for repairs, leaving bicycle commuters and pedestrians with a few inches of wiggle room in the face of heavy traffic. Citizens have brought these issues to the DCR since June 2008 but the Commonwealth has not included accommodations for safety in its multi-year construction plan. Someone will get hurt. This and other videos will serve as evidence when the Commonwealth faces liability for injuries on the bridge.
We must do a LOT more to provide a place for bicyclists. Boston has the smarts to make itself a world-class bicycle-accessible city. I hope there are a few dollars devoted to this in the $300,000,000 budget to restore Longfellow bridge.
