The Prokofiev-Shakespeare ballet Romeo & Juliet, in Rudolf Nureyev's choreography, premiered London 1977. This is Nureyev's video of his 1980 La Scala production with himself as Romeo, Carla Fracci as Juliet, Margot Fonteyn as Lady Capulet and Tiziano Mietto as Tybalt. Conductor Michel Sasson.

  • what's the name of the song danced here?

  • Dance of the Knights. It's from Act One of the full-length ballet that Prokofiev composed to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet".

  • I'm not exactly a professional theater / ballet critic (nor have I seen the rest of this production...) - but doesn't it seem fitting for Romeo & Juliet?

    It's like a funeral dirge, heavy & oppressive - like the world that these two star-crossed lovers inhabit; trapped in a world that won't let them be together the way they wish to be.

    Admittedly, R&J is my least favorite of Shakespeare's works, but if anything fits this work, it's a somber & heavy atmosphere.

    Just my two cents. :o)

  • I saw this done by the Russian National Ballet at the University of Illinois a few years ago. It was beautiful. I especially liked the men's section (of course, hot russians? come on). And the costumes were all red and black, so it was like a giant group of attractive, dancing Spider-Men coming right at you.

  • @lietuvaite93 Funny how time flies. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be sure to check it out. :)

  • @mikepalomino i know you wrote this two years ago, but i would definitely recommend watching this: (search for Nureyev, POB, Documentary. 2of4. Romeo and Juliet

    )

    It really fully explains Nureyev's choreography, his reasons, and honestly...I now find his version more beautiful than the "traditional" sweet, romantic version that is usually danced

  • Spectacular !

  • When men were men....and women WEREN'T.

  • Some say it is too heavy... But imagine situation and feelings around it, as was designed by the Poet! This is something to be reproduced by music and dance. Forgive this heaviness, it is adeqate.

  • Arresting. From Dame Margo's first step, I couldn't keep my eyes from it. And the music of Prokofiev is utterly mesmerizing.

  • i presonally don't like the Nureyev choreography, it feels a little too overdone, especially considering the period this is intended to represent... it lacks finess. personal opinion of course.

  • i think nureyev's choreography is more colorful than sir kenneth macmillian's, the one which is performed by ABT.

  • i love this piece and the dance... have the possibility of hearing this makes me love youtube :)
