Which translation are you reading. I'm currently reading Seamus Heaney's translation. Just curious.

my original text, near the translation, is:
Hwæt! wē Gār-Dena in geār-dagum
þēod-cyninga þrym gefrūnon,
hū þā æðelingas ellen fremedon.

this sounds great!(:
i kind of think its interesting though, how the monks put their own twists into it. it makes it more of a story of different cultures, where you have the changes made to it as it was handed down through the generations, and then as it was written for the first time by the monks, and then again as the translator wrote it. i don't know, the fact that its a story that has been touched by so many hands fascinates me (:
