Johnny Mathis Sings Victor Hugo
God on high
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there
He is young
He's afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed.
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home.
He's like the son I might have known
If God had granted me a son.
The summers die
One by one
How soon they fly
On and on
And I am old
And will be gone.
Bring him peace
Bring him joy
He is young
He is only a boy
You can take
You can give
Let him be
Let him live
If I die
Let me die
Let him live
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home.
You really didn't need to write out the lyrics, because Mathis's every word is crystal clear. He belongs to the old school of pop singers who actually knew how to sing. Imagine that!

Gordoncamp, he is not singing Victor Hugo, he is singing Boublil, Shonberg and Kretzmer, Hugo wrote the novel, they wrote the musical. Quite a nice version, not quite as good as Colm Wilkinson though.

arguably among the top three "pop" vocalists of all time, and his beautiful voice remains only slightly darkened over time. it is truly amazing. i did not know he had sung this and it has been a great discovery. those who like this might also wish to audition gary morris' interpretation, which is unique in its own right.

Not only is this a heartrending song, but Johnny adds his own vibe to it! Bravo, Johnny!
