The core did melt and there was very real threat to the water aquafer below the plant.
The disaster was avoided by tunneling under the reactor and digging space under it wich was filled with concrete.

No need to apologize. I'm the one who made the mistake.

@BlizBob excuse my ignorance, ..

Sorry. In Finland we type Tšernobyl (Chernobyl) as "Tshernobyl".

@BlizBob where is Tshernobyl?????????????????

BlizBob, if the core had melted it would have gone down into the water aquafer below the plant and all of Russia ground water would have been contaminated. That water aquafer was the main water table for all of Russia. most Russian would be dead. All animals dead, etc. Instead containmination was limited to Chernolbyl, Poland, and France. Initially reported at 4,000 dead, but 25 years later the now official Russian reports closer to 20,000 dead. Other countries numbers are much higher.
It is geometrically impossible for a Nuclear Power plant to blow up like a bomb.

True. In Tshernobyl the explosion was steam and not the reactor it self.
If the core had melted and they could have wented the steam out and thus preventing the explosion the level of radiation into the enverioment would have been significantly lower.
Greenpeace people would like us to think that every nuclear powerplant is actually a bomb that might explode at any given moment. Like Tshernobyl.
