I dunno, that's kind of a charm about left 4 dead, unlike pretty much every other game that has been made in the past year or so! The characters were relatable, the sort of people you wouldn't expect to see in a tense zombie game. What other game on the market lets you play as a Nam vet, a college girl, an office worker and a biker. Sorry to rant here but I think if the four survivors had been military folk, the game would be generic as hell.

It became generic the minute Turtle Rock Studios sold out to Valve. Left 4 Dead was suppose to have a darker undertone than what it is now :/
Oh well, anyways the main reason is that these are just random immune survivors fighting to live.
