dangerously close to being a mary-sue?! LMAO!!! She is a bona-fide Mary-sue in the Worst way! And she is not a time lord! Time Lord is a title, NOT A RACE! It says so in both 'The Deadly Assassin' and in 'Invasion of Time'.

River is a fucking pain in the arse! fat ugly pig who makes a lot of us want to vomit!

@JimmyColls IN FACT, having Amy and Rory's friend Mel as the third companion in the Fifth Series in place of River would have made the reveal in the Sixth a lot more meaningful.

@psychicllamakiller While I personally like River, being the only companion to simultaneously present a mystery, a love interest and a genuine threat for The Doctor, I agree that she's been overused. In the Sixth Series of the reboot she was central to the ongoing mystery, so I can forgive that she appears almost constantly. However, even though I love River, I'll concede that from a story telling perspective there was virtually no point to having her in the Fifth Series.

@friedasmith You're only making an argument for why River is such a great companion. You're right - she was brainwashed into being a psychopath - but seeing how far she's come from that point in her life and being shown that she can revert back to her programming at any time and either go for The Doctor's throat or destroy all of reality by way of a paradox makes her fascinating. She's the only companion in Who history to be a genuine threat to The Doctor.
